Designing a website for your dental practice can be a challenge. Should you make the site yourself with Wix? Outsource a custom website to a professional? The options are endless.

At Web Pro MD, we love helping dentists establish themselves on the web. A properly designed and optimized website is a great tool for building your brand & booking more patients. Here are a few things you should consider before embarking on a website overhaul.

Should I build the website myself?

Short answer – No. As the owner of a new (or well established) dental practice, there are many better uses of your time. Learning web development well is a skill that takes years. Are we saying that it’s impossible? Absolutely not. With modern page builder platforms you could have a website up and running in a couple of weeks. However, the quality of the site would suffer, and you’re better off spending your time building aspects of the business that require your medical expertise.

What is the goal of the website?

This, while often overlooked, is extremely important. What action do you want people to take on your website? Oftentimes dental practices opt for a free teeth cleaning as their conversion goal. Once you’ve identified what action you want website visitors to take, designing a website that funnels traffic towards that goal becomes much easier.

What is the look and feel of your brand?

The color scheme, font family, and photography on your website communicate many subtle quality indicators to potential patients. You can use a tool like coolors to start brainstorming on color schemes and browse google fonts to see if any fonts suit your brand. Another helpful place to start can be browsing your competitor’s websites – what aspects of their websites do you like? Which do you dislike? Framing your preferences around examples of other websites makes communicating with your development team much more fluid.

What platform should you build the site on?

The options for website development have exploded in recent years. Wix, Squarespace, WordPress, and more. Here at Web Pro MD, we’re partial to WordPress. While the development cost is higher for a WordPress site vs. more user-friendly alternatives, we’ve found that WordPress sites tend to convert better, faster, and look modern longer than other web platforms.

Who is providing the text content for the website?

Copywriting is the oft-overlooked cousin of website design. Unless you have a passion for writing, we recommend letting a professional handle the copy for your website. There is a nuance to writing copy for the web, and we’ve found that oftentimes dentists are too close to their business to write effective, conversion-optimized copy. In general, your copy should speak in teams of benefits as opposed to features. Does a patient really care about the medical terminology associated with a root canal? No. They’d rather hear about how long the recovery time is and how great they’re going to look and feel afterward.

How are you going to drive traffic to the site?

Congratulations. You are now the proud owner of a shiny new website. Now it’s time to drive some traffic. We recommend a combination of paid digital advertising and an investment in local SEO to drive targeted leads to your dental clinic from day one. We love converting website visitors into paying customers. If you’re interested in growing your dental practice, give us a call here.
